The Mission

The Planning Commission advises the Mayor, City Council and City departments on broad planning goals, policies and plans for the physical development of the City.

The Commission’s work is framed by the Comprehensive Plan and its vision for Seattle into the 21^st Century, and by a commitment to engaging citizens in the work of planning for and working to reach these goals.

Planning Commission Facts

• SPC was established by City Charter in 1946.
• SPC is an independent body that advises Mayor, City Council, and City departments on planning policies and physical development plans and projects.
• SPC has 15 members who are Seattle residents
  it includes an engineer or architect,
  an urban planner,
  ethnic minority members, and
  citizens active in neighborhood or community affairs.

Planning Commission Roles

• Fosters: community participation to support quality urban planning and design
• Advises: City decision-makers on broad planning policies and goals, and on major planning projects and issues
• Educates: leaders and citizens to promote excellence in planning, particularly at the intersection of urban design, preservation, art, and architecture
• Advocates: for planning decisions that support the health and vitality of the community
