Class Summary:
Directs and supervises the activities of employees who investigate and
inspect businesses to ensure compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to taxes,
licenses, weights and measures, unit pricing, false advertising, and unfair and deceptive
trade practices.
Distinguishing Characteristics of the Class:
This is the second-level class in a series of two in the Licensing and
Inspection series. Employees in this class are first-line supervisors who assign work
activities, set priorities, and train subordinate staff including Licenses and Standards
Inspectors regarding enforcement codes, policies and procedures. This class differs from
Licensing and Standards Inspectors in that it performs supervisory duties.
Employees in this class have the knowledge of and ability to interpret
a large number of ordinances and regulations, and apply them to field situations
encountered by subordinates. Under limited supervision they resolve most problems and
assist in the preparation of proposed changes in laws and regulations. Priorities and
deadlines are set by the supervisor and employee. Personal contacts include the public and
law enforcement agencies for such purposes as coordinating inspections and issuing or
revoking permits.
Examples of Work:
- Plans, assigns, prioritizes, and supervises work of inspectors in enforcement of
ordinances and regulations pertaining to taxes, licenses, weights and measures, unit
pricing, false advertising, and unfair and deceptive trade practices.
- Explains new laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures to subordinates and
the public. Assists in preparation of proposed changes in laws, ordinances, and
regulations.
- Supervises the investigation of complaints and the arrest of violators.
- Investigates and processes towed and impounded vehicle release requests and related
complaints.
- Conducts performance evaluations and establishes subordinates priorities.
- Conducts field follow-up inspections to review the work of inspectors.
- Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Normally required to lift up to 50 pounds. May require working around
toxic/hazardous substances. Requires working with the public in potentially
hazardous/abusive situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires two years experience as a Licenses and Standards Inspector, or
four years experience of inspection or investigative field work enforcing or interpreting
technical regulations, laws and statutes involving continual direct public contact (or a
combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent
background required to perform the work of the class).
Licensing and Other Requirements:
Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent
mobility. Special police commission. May require current Grade IV Steam Engineer's
License.
