Funding from the 2000 Pro Parks Levy, the Department of Neighborhood Matching Fund, and community support completed the first phase of the Steps project. The Steps provide access from Wallingford to the Burke-Gilman Trail and open space. Constructed improvements at the site include concrete staircases, ramps, seating, railings, pavers, concrete planters with irrigation, plantings and lighting.
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Wallingford Steps Project grew out of a concept for a connection between Wallingford and the Burke-Gilman trail in the Wallingford Neighborhood Plan. A Department of Neighborhood Opportunity Fund grant was used to hire an architect to develop a design plan. Through the master use permit process, the City gained the commitment of developers of the adjacent property to participate in development of the Steps project. Since the initial planning phase, the scope of the project has been changed by a number of issues and circumstances, including increases in the estimated construction cost and the decision by one of the developers to delay construction on his project. At the Dec. 10, 2001 public meeting, Parks received the remaining contractor’s financial commitment to participate with the City in the construction of the project and the community’s support for a modified plan. The project proposed by the Parks would provide access from Wallingford to the Burke-Gilman Trail, open space, ADA access, and structural reinforcement on the undeveloped side of the project.
