August 2008
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThis project was constructed by the Seattle School District in conjunction with the new high school under construction on the northeast corner of the site. Tom Rengstorf of Thomas V. Rengstorf Associates was the landscape architect in charge of designing the plaza. As suggested by the community, a large permanent labyrinth was created there. The labyrinth is viewed as a metaphor for life's journey. It
offers lessons as one walks the labryinth path. Walking the path
can assist a person in addressing life's challenges by achieving
a meditative state and finding peace and serenity.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
|
Creating a community gathering place at the corner
of S. Henderson St. and Rainier Ave. S. was a priority identified
in the Rainier Beach Neighborhood Plan. Since August 2002, community
representatives have positioned themselves on the South Shore
School Design Review Team to assist in creating design concepts
for the new school as well as overall site improvements. The plaza
at Rainier and Henderson is a focal point in these site improvements.
