This acquisition is being further pursued with funding from the Parks and Green Spaces Levy passed in 2008.
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONPotential acquisitions to connect and extend existing green space in the Maple School Ravine. This linear natural area at the south end of Beacon Hill includes about 15 acres of publicly owned property. It is the wooded hillside several blocks east of Cleveland High School, and just west of the historic Comet Lodge Cemetery. In 1993, the City adopted the Green Space Policy to encourage the preservation of green spaces in Seattle. The policy included maps for more than 30 green spaces. The policy aimed to preserve natural landscape and habitat; provide natural buffers between land uses; mitigate noise and air pollution; reduce need for constructed storm water systems; and preserve natural drainage. Maple School Natural Area was one of the green spaces mapped in the policy. On November 12, 2002, the Pro Parks Levy Oversight Committee included Maple School Natural Area among the green spaces to be further considered for acquisition through the Pro Parks Levy Green Spaces category.
