The Community Building was awarded a Citation in the 2003 Honor Awards for Washington Architecture by the Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This was one of only seven projects recognized by the jury of internationally renowned architects. Congratulations to architect Scot Carr of SHED Seattle, and to all those who worked so diligently to realize this project!

The Bradner Gardens Park Community Building Project is Complete !
The Community Building is now open to visitors. Its restroom is decorated with a wonderful ceramic tile mural created by artist Joyce Moty, Liz Cross, Gyda Fossland and her dedicated band of volunteers. Make a visit to the Gardens soon!

The Bradner Gardens Community Building is located within Bradner Gardens Park, located between Bradner Place S. and 29th Avenue S., near S. Massachusetts Street, south of the I-90 lid.
The Pro Parks Levy provides $222,696 project costs of planning, design and construction. Additional funds, totaling $162,465, come from a variety of public and private sources.

Citizens active in the development of the Bradner Gardens Park began design work for the renovation of an existing Parks storage and toilet building several years ago with the assistance of the UW Architecture School's Design/Build Studio. Subsequently, the community group developed funding from various agencies and foundations to support construction of this project. The remainder of the required funding was secured by the passage of the 2000 Pro Parks Levy. The renovated building includes the following elements:
  • Reuse of most of the existing concrete-block storage and toilet building.
  • A new community meeting room, with natural-gas fireplace, and display for the gardening library maintained by the Master Gardener.
  • A new toilet room and utility room within the renovated existing building.
  • A new roof system incorporating electricity-generating photo-voltaic panels that generate a net surplus of power.
  • Use of sustainable materials, most with low embodied-energy from renewable sources.


Parks has prepared a public involvement plan that outlines procedures for soliciting and considering public input. The Plan identifies people affected, timeline, the method for soliciting and incorporating community input, and communication techniques. There are many opportunities to be involved.
  • Community-wide Public Meetings and Workshops - Parks held an open meeting on 30 May 2002 during which the final design was shared with the general community.
  • Neighborhood Meetings - Parks has gone to neighborhood council, neighborhood plan stewardship meetings as needed to provide updates and gather comments during the design of the project.
