PROJECT STATUS
Thank you, Seattle!
This project is complete.
Seattle Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with Starbucks Corporation,
held a grand opening ceremony and celebration on Saturday, February 10,
2007. There was marimba music, food, entertainment and play time on the
new playground, which was paid for with a Starbucks grant.
In spite of a concrete drivers strike in King County at the end of the summer,
the project remained on schedule and within budget. The Contractor, M.J.
Takisaki Inc was able to effectively minimize the associated strike impacts.
This project improved the Van Asselt play area in coordination with the
Community Center Levy project to renovate and expand the adjacent Van
Asselt Community Center.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Van Asselt Community Center play area is a popular destination for many
childcare programs in the community, and will provide a safe place for people
of all ages to play, learn, contemplate and build community.
Combined funding by the Pro Parks Opportunity Fund and grant funding from
Starbucks means that Seattle Parks and the neighboring community can design
and build a new, safer play area in conjunction with the renovation and
expansion of the adjacent Van Asselt Community Center.
This play area, considered an essential part of this vibrant and growing
neighborhood, will also be an excellent community gathering place for events,
festivals and family play for many decades.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The community nominated this project through the Opportunity
Fund portion of the Pro Parks Levy. The project is located next to Seattle
Housing Authority's New Holly campus, and the neighborhood is diverse
in age, income and cultural background.
