The 7,332 square-foot property at the southeast corner of 12th Ave. and East James Court was transferred to Parks from the Department of Neighborhoods in January 2008. Parks removed the existing building from the site.

Seattle Parks acquisition staff worked with the community to identify potential sites for a new neighborhood park. A public meeting was held on January 29, 2007. Two City-owned properties emerged as priority sites for the new park due to their availability and central location: the vacant property at the northeast corner of 12th Avenue and East Jefferson Street, and a smaller property at the southeast corner of 12th and East James Court.

In September 2005, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved projects to be funded through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, including a park acquisition in the 12th Avenue Urban Village. Planning for this project started in 2005. At this time, King County awarded $500,000 in Conservation Futures Tax funds for an acquisition project.
LOCATION 12th Avenue Urban Village
This project was allocated funding from the Pro Parks Opportunity Fund.


The 12th Avenue Urban Village is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Seattle. In ten years (1994-2003) it achieved 155% of its 20-year residential growth target. This project seeks to acquire land for a new neighborhood park and gathering space for this densely developed community.


12th Avenue and Squire Park residents have been working for some time to increase park and open space in their neighborhood, and to create an active gathering place for the community. They successfully nominated this acquisition project for the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, and are working with Parks acquisition staff to explore potential sites for Parks purchase.
