University Heights Open Space South Lot
Project Information

Location: University Way NE and NE 50th Street

Project Status

April 2014
Parks and University Heights Community Center (UHCC) began design development work in May 2012. We have been working together to refine the site plan to meet our mutual needs and have planned modifications to the schematic plan.

The revised plan eliminates a driveway along Brooklyn Ave NE within UHCC property to allow more landscaped area and to preserves more of the current play yard space. A mid-block entry from NE 50th St. was also eliminated. Geo-technical work was completed in 2012 to help design the rain gardens.

The greatest change is tied to the fact that the Farmers Market will move to University Way in the fall of 2013. This reduces some of the details and improvements that the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance and UHCC had been seeking to accommodate the Saturday market. This change will not be easy or simple for any of the parties involved, but allows some flexibility in the design. In fact the project was “on-hold” for several months as UHCC and NMFA tried to negotiate a long term agreement.

Some slight changes were made even though the project was at 95% CD and now it all seems to be headed in the right direction. Parks plans to bid in late summer or early fall 2013 and get the work started.

Project Description

Create a multi-use community open space for public use on the south side of University Heights Center for the Community (UHCC), including a performance area/plaza, rain gardens to improve storm water quality, landscaped areas and other amenities. The design will incorporate the farmers market use on a portion of Parks property and the removal of parking from the Parks-owned portion of the site.

This project is one of fifteen community initiated projects that received Opportunity Funds, and combines $254,000 development funds from the 2000 Pro Parks Levy and $747,000 funding from the Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Fund. The application receivedYou will need adobe acrobat reader to view this document. from the community is a preliminary concept and the final design may be constrained by the actual project budget. All Opportunity Fund projects will go through Park’s public involvement procedure which includes public meetings and community input. They will also go through an internal Parks process to ensure the most effective implementation.
