October 2009

The community received a Neighborhood Matching Fund award in 2009. They hired SiteWorkshop landscape architects to work with them on a design. Three public meetings have been held to produce a schematic design  The design arose from neighbor's ideas for the park.

There are four parcels adjacent to the park; two are now owned by Parks.  The first was a brainstorming meeting (see notes below), the second was to review three concept ideas and the third was to review the schematic plan. The last meeting was held October 5th.

Twenty three people attended the third and last public meeting for schematic design.  In addition, information from 156 surveys were incorporated in the design.  Two designs were shown; one without development of the other two parcels and one with development in that area.

In general most people liked the plan; the comments were on individual elements. (See notes for meeting #3)

The next steps are to start design development and to start raising money for construction.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

There are four properties next to Greenwood Park along Fremont Avenue.  Two are currently owned by Seattle Parks and Recreation; two are privately owned and not for sale.  Vision Greenwood Park is a community based effort to create a conceptual design for expanding Greenwood Park.

With a plan in hand the community will be ready to present the vision to the Parks Department and the City and be set to continue to create something lively in these open spaces when they are all acquired.
