The Friends of 19th and Madison held the second public design meeting March 27, 2013. Three design options were presented: the "Armchair", the "Eddy" and the "Convergence. The consultants presented the ideas and then people circulated to stations; each of which had a plan. The comments were recorded in the notes below.

At first public design meeting on March 5, 2013. Jim Brennan, the landscape architect from J.A. Brennan & Associates, presented design and concept ideas inspiring productive conversation. Art ideas were also presented.

The Friends of 19th and Madison Park hired J.A. Brennan and Associates and public artist Carolyn Law as consultants. They will help conduct three public meetings to develop a schematic design and a naming process for the park.

The Friends of 19th and Madison Park received Neighborhood Matching Funds (NMF) to hire a landscape architect to complete a schematic design and a preliminary cost estimate. The consultant and the Steering Committee, along with Parks, will be conducting public outreach and design workshops together.

This site was acquired with the condition that the maintenance of any development be performed by community members. SeattleWorks will work with Parks and the community to do this. Tomilyn Rupert represents SeattleWorks ("Do Something"), the organization that will be organizing monthly maintenance work parties for this site. The Friends of 19th and Madison conducted a neighborhood survey and received 171 responses. The project site is next to the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center (HSDC) and we hope to continue to have members of that community involved in the project.

This Parks and Green Spaces Opportunity Fund acquisition is complete. Parks staff completed the acquisition of the 4,500 square foot, triangular-shaped lot on April 29, 2011. A consortium of neighborhood organizations will work with Seattle Parks on planning, design and construction of the new park.

Project Description

The intent of this Opportunity Fund project was to acquire a open space for the neighborhood. The future goal is to create a beautiful, tranquil green oasis in an urban setting, to include a sensory garden for people with disabilities and a community gathering space on what is currently a vacant lot.

This project was selected for the first round of Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Funding. The application received in this community-initiated process is a preliminary concept and the final design may be constrained by the project budget. All projects will go through Park’s public involvement procedure which includes public meetings and community input. They will also go through an internal Parks process to ensure the most effective implementation.
