Wallingford PlayfieldSeattle Parks and Recreation Information: (206) 684-4075 | Contact Us TTY Phone: (206) 233-1509 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTSThe Hamilton International Middle School renovation provided an opportunity for Seattle Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with the community, to develop and implement a plan for the interface between Hamilton and Wallingford Playfield. Our primary goal is to create a safe and smooth connection between the school and Wallingford Park. We held three community meetings from October 2007 to January 2008. These meetings were well attended by the community and provided extremely helpful feedback on the wants and needs of the neighborhood. We looked at all of the input that we received from the community on the concepts discussed at the meetings and worked with Seattle Public Schools and our staff to come up with a draft design for the interface between the school and the park that incorporated the comments we heard from the community. With funding from SPS, a Landscape Architect, Karen Kiest, was hired to refine the design and take us through the construction process. The plan we have come up with adds approximately 5,625 sq. ft. to the existing Sunken Garden area, making the space much larger than it was in its old configuration. The design also provides a comparable outdoor paved space that will be available for community use. It is important to note that the new gym that will be developed as part of the Hamilton International Middle School renovation will add 8,334 sq. feet of community recreation space. I want to thank everyone for the time and energy that you have put into the public community process. We received valuable community input that has helped us develop a thoughtful design for the site and a great addition to the Wallingford Community. In addition, I was very impressed with the open-mindedness of the members of the community and the department staff to come up with an innovative plan that meets everyone’s needs at some level. We welcome your input on our design. Click to skip down to:
HOURS4 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. ABOUT THE PARKWallingford Playfield has long been a popular neighborhood gathering place for tennis, picnics, wading pool splashing in summer, ball games, and playing-and now it has a new face. Its entirely new, deluxe play area, completed in the fall of 2004, includes a play structure specially designed for two- to five-year-olds, with a variety of slides. The wading pool was renovated, and all elements are wheelchair accessible. Park entrances were renovated and new lampposts added. Extensive landscaping surrounds the wading pool, and a crushed rock path around the playfield connects to the paths on the park's east end. Community volunteers renovated the park's short, steep west border into a vibrant native plant garden. New picnic tables, benches, and sitting boulders provide plenty of places to sit and read, rest, or watch children play. Acreage: 4.5HISTORYThe City bought this land for park use in 1924 and it was well-used by community members over the next three-quarters of a century. From 1999 to 2004, the City and the community worked together to extensively renovate Wallingford Playfield. With the community's vision and dedicated work, and money from the Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund and the Pro Parks Levy for planning, design, and construction, the park renovation was completed in 2004.
