ABOUT THE PARK

Long called the 37th Avenue Park, this South Beacon Hill park was renamed the John C. Little, Sr. Park in September 2004. The park is located next to NewHolly, a newly developed mixed-income community that replaced the Holly Park public housing and is still growing. In keeping with the neighborhood's growth and development, the park is slated for improvements in 2005 that include: picnic shelters, a plaza, an expanded children's play area, landscaping, and a community garden.

Acreage: 5.8

HISTORY

John C. Little, Sr. (d. 1999) was a member of the Board of Park Commissioners for seven years. Naming the park after him celebrates his service and career developing programs and services for the community, especially disadvantaged youth and the low-income families. Mr. Little helped found the Central Area Youth Association and created a 4-H program for Seattle modeled on the program for rural kids.

The process of replacing Seattle Housing Authority's Holly Park low-income housing with a vibrant, multiethnic, mixed-income community began in the late 1990s and continued into 2005. The improvements to John C. Little, Sr. Park, which will be funded by the 2000 Pro Parks Levy, are among the amenities that are transforming this Southeast Seattle neighborhood.

The Parks Superintendent, and Board of Park Commissioners, presents the John C. Little, Sr. award every year to a Seattle Parks and Recreation employee who exemplifies Johns extraordinary legacy of making a difference in young lives and the community.
