The property was deeded to the city in 1902 by Mary Denny on the condition that it be beautified as a park, monument or fountain. Nearby Marion St. was named for James Marion Denny, brother of Arthur Denny, who had been named for General Frances Marion, “swamp fox” of the Revolution.
