Lifeguard Training Instructor Certification

Seattle Parks and Recreation teaches American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor (LGI). This, approximately 30 hour, course includes practical methods and theory for teaching Life Guarding and Water Safety.

While not required for temporary employment as a lifeguard, all of our lifeguards hold Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification. LGI's are preferred job candidates because of the level of teaching training they have received. This certification also helps temporary staff if they choose to apply for permanent positions.

Lifeguard Training Instructors are Authorized to Teach:

• Lifeguard Training
• Lifeguard Management
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer
• Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
• Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer
• Preventing Disease Transmission
• Community Water Safety
• Basic Water Rescue

Lifeguard Training Instructor Authorization is valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites:

• Must be 16 years of age
• Must hold another Red Cross Instructor Authorization (such as CPR or First Aid) or complete the Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) course.
• Must be able to pass a skills and written pretest, which includes all the materials in the final tests for Lifeguard Training
• Candidates must attend all sessions to pass this course

• Payment is required in order to register for the class. Please contact the pool to make a reservations, and for further information about fees and textbooks.
• If participant is under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian must sign a permission/registration form.
• Space is limited, registration will be done on a first come first serve basis.
