Senior Landscape Architect

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is currently seeking a Senior Landscape Architect to work within the Engineering and Design Services Group, which is part of the Planning and Development Division. This well-rounded professional has experience and educational credentials that will allows them to effectively provide senior-level professional design services and respond to the wide variety technical questions that arise daily within our extensive park system, which includes 6400 acres of park land and a wide range of facilities, athletic fields, wading pools, sports facilities, playgrounds, trails, and more.

Your unique combination of skills and experience has prepared you for these responsibilities:

  • Develop complete long and short range planting programs and work projects for the City including develop­ing and updating work plans and cost forecasts. 
  • Serve as project manager and principal designer on complex projects involving City landscape work. Perform technically complex or politi­cally sensitive landscape planning and design work.
  • Act as liaison with other divisions and agencies in the review of project plans and specifications regarding maintenance and design issues.
  • Train and evaluates subordinate personnel.
  • Act as liaison with consultants performing landscape architecture work for City. Review plans and specifications for compliance with accepted standards.
  • Participate in the preparation of annual operating and capital project budget.
  • Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and standards relating to landscape architecture projects and programs.

The most competitive candidates will meet these requirements:

  • A minimum of four years of experience in landscape architecture, and a baccalaureate degree in Landscape Architecture (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class)
  • Registration as a professional Landscape Architect in the State of Washington is required for employment
  • Current State of Washington driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility

Our desired qualifications include:

  • Experience in design of a wide variety of park features, such as gardens, plazas, trails, wetlands, play areas, playfields, outdoor sports courts, shorelines, irrigation systems, riparian corridors and streams, etc.
  • Experience in creating conceptual and schematic designs
  • Experience preparing construction drawings, details, and specifications
  • Experience preparing cost estimates
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (ADA, Play Area, CPSI, ASTM, ECA, GSI, etc.)
  • Understanding of construction-related municipal and state agency permitting processes (SEPA, wetland, JARPA, grading, building, land use, etc.)
