We're seeking an outstanding candidate to be Director of the Seattle Parks and Recreation Facilities Maintenance Division. Our Facilities Maintenance Division maintains more than 25 miles of boulevards and manages many facilities, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small craft centers, 4 golf courses, an outdoor stadium, and much more.  


You'll be working with the Superintendent to set the overall vision for Facilities Maintenance, and provide leadership to the Facilities Maintenance Division staff. Your role is responsible for all aspects of building and utility maintenance in for approximately 165 FTE with biennial funding exceeding $50 million dedicated to the maintenance of approximately 500+ buildings. Responsibilities includel: 

  • Direct and further develop preventative maintenance program to better sustain asset lifecycles
  • Maintain and further develop departmental regulatory compliance programs to comply with City, State, and Federal agencies
  • Develop and direct initiatives and activities to effect pro-active regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship and sustainability to support the long-term protection and preservation of the environment, the Department's capital assets, and the safety and quality of the workplace
  • Leverage a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track division-wide Key Performance Indicators (KPI's). Utilize KPI's to better determine resource allocation
  • Maintain and further develop Division's lean management ethic to promote continuous improvement
  • Partner with SPR's Planning and Development Division on implementation of major maintenance capital improvement programs to maintain life cycle replacements of assets
  • Partner with SPR's Finance Division in preparation and management of a Division budget

  • Direct personnel administration, in partnership with Human Resources Division, including broad issues of classification/compensation, recruitment, training, discipline and labor relations, as well as collective bargaining negotiations

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, business, public administration, or a related discipline (or the equivalent of two years' experience and/or training and/or education in the fields mentioned above that provides the equivalent to work in the class), plus five years of increasingly responsible management-level experience in facilities management, service delivery and/or business operations related to facilities management, including supervision of multiple direct reports. Comparable skills will be evaluated.  

Must have a current, valid driver's license.

Your experience includes:

  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience managing and directing employees in facilities maintenance functions for a large and complex organization.
  • Five years progressively responsible experience leading an action agenda in a municipal or large private sector management capacity.
  • Four or more years of successful experience planning, developing and implementing a variety of programs and partnerships, as well as maintaining positive relationships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partner organizations and advocacy groups.  
  • Four or more years of experience directly and effectively managing a large budget and leveraging funding from a variety of sources.  
  • Demonstrated success utilizing key performance indicators/metrics to assess performance and drive organizational improvements. Experience leading continuous process improvement initiatives.
