2020 Cal Anderson Park

Updated: October 15, 2020

Fall 2020

2020 Cal Anderson Park is a project of Seattle Parks and Recreation to engage the public on how changing assumptions and language can affect the design of park spaces and create a sense of belonging for everyone. What is important to our community must be reflected in our parks. Our goal is to engage community around how we can use Seattle's parks spaces to support better outcomes for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities in our city and our region.

We at the City of Seattle lead with race. This means that in our efforts to provide services and welcoming parks and facilities to our residents, we recognize the historical barriers in different communities and we aim to prioritize those most disadvantaged. As we move forward with 2020 Cal Anderson, we are centering the outreach effort around the BIPOC and LBGTQIA communities.

We started the conversation with meetings in the beginning of August framing the topic, reviewing the history of the park, and discussing ideas to better create a sense of belonging. In the second week of September we held meetings to inventory and prioritize ideas by reviewing the opportunities and constraints of the site. In the third and final meeting, we discussed implementation and piloting of immediate action items.
