| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
History
During the development of the Rainier Beach 2014 Neighborhood Plan in the
1990s, the community recognized the significance of the 52nd Avenue South
pedestrian walkway in linking the commercial core with light rail and residential
neighborhoods. The corridor stretches along 52nd Avenue South between S.
Henderson St. and Rainier Avenue S. in the Rainier Beach neighborhood and
provides important links between Rainier Beach High School, Rainier Beach
Community Center, Rainier Beach Library, the Rainier Beach Business District
and the Lake Washington Apartments.
Mapes Creek 52nd Avenue Walkway received Department of Neighborhood (DON)
Funds to create a Walkway Plan in 1999 and in 2002 the community received
another DON grant to implement the first phase of the Walkway at the Henderson
Street Plaza. In 2002 Friends of Lake Washington Apartments applied for
and received $100,000 from the Pro Parks Opportunity Fund to continue the
implementation of the Mapes Creek 52nd Avenue Walkway Plan.
