Seattle Parks has acquired four properties in the Duwamish Head Greenbelt through the Levy program.

The most spectacular acquisition is a
.4-acre view property at 2035 Sumner Ave SW, accessed from Fairmount Ave SW. It is adjacent to other Seattle Parks properties in the green space that are preserved as habitat for bald eagles and other species.

Additional acquisitions include:

  • The donation of a .39-acre site to Seattle Parks in 2003.
  • The purchase of a .31-acre former City Light property on Admiral Way SW in 2006.
  • The purchase of a .07-acre property from King County in 2004.
These acquisitions were funded through the Pro Parks Levy and a matching grant from the King County Conservation Futures Tax.

The Pro Parks Levy's $10 million Green Spaces category funds acquisitions to preserve Seattles green spaces. The Oversight Committee has included the Duwamish Head Greenbelt among 13 of the Citys adopted Green Spaces.

Acquisitions to connect and extend existing green space in the Duwamish Head Greenbelt.

This greenbelt is one of the most visible green spaces in Seattle. It includes the forested hillsides that extend around Alki Point. If you are in downtown Seattle and look west across Elliott Bay to West Seattle, the forested slopes that you see are the Duwamish Head Greenbelt. It is provides habitat for diverse wildlife, and includes an eagles' nest.

Seattle Parks and Recreation preserved more than 55 acres in this greenbelt in the 1990s.

In addition to the areas mentioned below under "community involvement," a 6.5 acre site was purchased at SW Admiral Way and 34th Ave SW in the 1990s, as well as an 8 acre area accessible to pedestrians from Bonair Dr SW.


The Fairmount Ravine Preservation Group has been active in cleaning up and restoring the Fairmount Ravine portion of the greenbelt. The ravine begins at Harbor Ave SW and Fairmount Ave SW, across from Salty's restaurant in West Seattle.

The community was also active in organizing to preserve and restore the College Street Ravine portion of the greenbelt.
