Thank you, Seattle. This Pro Parks Levy acquisition project is complete!

On November 14 2006, Seattle Parks purchased space to add a fitness and weight room to the community center. The new room will add about 500 square feet to the center, which also includes a gym.

The community center's advisory council has begun a fundraising campaign to renovate the fitness room, which will include a new entryway and flooring and the purchase of additional fitness equipment.

In September 2005, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved projects to be funded through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, including $108,000 to acquire an additional space for the International District/Chinatown Community Center. Negotiations for the site started in late 2005.
LOCATION 719 8th Avenue South
BUDGET The Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund provides $108,000 for this project.
SCHEDULE Planning: Acquisition negotiations began in late 2005.
Completion: Acquisition completed in November 2006

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 2004, the Pro Parks Levy Oversight Committee toured projects that received funding through the first round of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, including the new International District/Chinatown Community Center.

Committee members noted that the new community center was very popular, but did not have a dedicated exercise or weight room. They also saw that a vacant space was available for purchase that was immediately adjacent to the community center entrance.

The advisory council for the community center successfully submitted an application to the second cycle of the Opportunity Fund to secure the space for use by the community center. Parks acquired the space in November 2006.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

The community center's advisory council successfully submitted an application for funding through the second cycle of the Opportunity Fund. Now that the space has been acquired, the advisory council is raising funds to renovate the space to create a fitness and weight room and to purchase additional fitness equipment. The weight room could be used by all age groups. Special programs will also serve the International District's large elderly population, estimated to comprise 60% of the community's residents.
