Thank you Seattle! This project is complete. Phase Two, funded by Department of Neigborhood Matching Fund and community contributions, includes rain gardens, right-of way plantings, new curving sidewalks, and the “living room” art installation. Dariotis Construction was awarded the contract. The “living room,” consisting of concrete sofa, chair and side table, was created by Nathan Arnold, concrete artist and mason. John Barker (the landscape architect) recommended him for this project because of his creativity and attention to detail. The neighborhood held a series of work parties and did the plantings for the park in 2008-9. Phase Three, in construction of summer and fall of 2009, is the "corner store." (plans attached). The shape is based on the typical squared off Ballard neighborhood grocery store. It serves as a formal entrance to the park and is composed of two columns that have historical information and two seating areas with twirling counter style seats.
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONIn 2003, Seattle Parks acquired property at 17th Avenue NW and NW 63rd Street with funding from the first cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund and a matching grant from King County Conservation Futures Tax (CFT) funds. In early 2007, Seattle Parks acquired the adjacent property at 17th Ave NW and NW 62nd St with Pro Parks Levy and County CFT funds. Funding from the second cycle of the Opportunity Fund will provide park amenities and develop the site to serve as a neighborhood park. This will be supplemented by Neighborhood Matching Funds and other community fundraising. In November 2006, the project received raves from the Design
Commision who praised its simplicity and attention to local history.
