Thank you Seattle this project is complete!
Construction of Phase One is was completed in October 2008. The work included grading, seating walls, pathways, drainage and irrigation. Community volunteers built the play structure and planted all the shrubs, bulbs and groundcover. The newly seeded lawn was off to a good start before winter. The site will remain fenced until the grass established.

A second phase of work managed by Friends of Ballard Corners is expected to begin shortly after the completion of the Parks project. This work, funded by Department of Neigborhood Matching Fund and community contributions, will include sidewalk replacement, installation of raingardens in the street planting area, curb revisions, and additional landscaping and artistic features within the park.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 2003, Seattle Parks acquired property at 17th Avenue NW and NW 63rd Street with funding from the first cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund and a matching grant from King County Conservation Futures Tax (CFT) funds.

In early 2007, Seattle Parks acquired the adjacent property at 17th Ave NW and NW 62nd St with Pro Parks Levy and County CFT funds.

Funding from the second cycle of the Opportunity Fund will provide park amenities and develop the site to serve as a neighborhood park. This will be supplemented by Neighborhood Matching Funds and other community fundraising.

In November 2006, the project received raves from the Design Commision who praised its simplicity and attention to local history.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

In the first cycle of the Pro Parks Opportunity Fund, Ballard citizens nominated a slate of properties for the Ballard Open Space project, drawing from a Ballard/Crown Hill Open Space Inventory and Action Plan. The property at 17th NW and NW 63rd was purchased in 2003 through the first cycle of the Opportunity Fund.

The community then nominated this site for park development through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Opportunity Fund.

In 2005, Friends of 63rd St. Pocket Park (now the Friends of Ballard Corners Park) received a $15,000 Department of Neighborhoods Small and Simple NMF award to begin planning for the new park improvements. They will apply for $100,000 from the Neighborhood Matching Fund Large Project Fund (NMF) and are actively fundraising for construction. This varied neighborhood includes seniors and people who live in rental apartments. They are repesented on the steering committee. The community website, www.ballardcornerspark.org describes in more detail some of the varied and unusual outreach and other events sponsored by the Friends of Ballard Corners Park.
