The Navy at one time used this 15-acre area in the southeastern corner of the park as a firing range. Over the years this unique area was neglected and became overgrown with invasive plants. Seattle Parks and Recreation removed several old structures, discarded equipment and moved tons of would-be compost to make way for the volunteer rehabilitation effort.

The 18-month volunteer-driven effort has made an enormous difference in restoring Promontory Point to a more natural setting. Nearly 200 volunteers have worked to plant more than 3,000 native plants. They also worked to refurbish several critical trail sections, installed new signs, built a covered shelter, and led the design and planting of a butterfly garden by Northwest Montessori grade school students.

The stewardship of this area will continue under the watchful eye of MESA.
