Vegetation Restoration for Betty Bowen Viewpoint in Marshall Park

Seattle Parks Urban Forestry program has identified this park as a top priority restoration site, based on its reforestation plan, Vegetation Management for Seattle Parks Viewpoints. The plan identifies needs and describes methods to make vegetation at designated park viewpoints throughout the city sustainable while preserving public views.

Zipper-Zeman Geotechnical Report on slope

In mid-2004 Seattle Parks contracted with Geotechnical consultants to evaluate slope stability impacts of proposed restoration activity.

Proposed restoration activities

• Pruning and removing Park trees that significantly block the designated public vista, or pose a risk of failure due to decline;
• Removing invasive slope vegetation and replanting/reseeding with non-weedy species;
• Planting lower-growing native trees to replace all removed trees ;
• Protecting slope from erosion;
• Installing a barrier hedge along top of slope to protect both hillside & visitors;
• Providing follow-up invasive plant control and establishment
  watering
