The Trails Program marks the commitment of Seattle Parks and Recreation
to address the need for trail maintenance, trail construction, and trail
development standards within our 4000+ acres of natural areas. Under the
program, we taking an inventory of existing trails and coordinating new
trail development.
While the exact inventory is not known, the park system has miles of
developed and semi-developed trails.
Some of these trails are in very good condition while others are in
poor condition and are in serious need of renovation.
Still
others receive regular use but aren't well known to the public
because they are located within newly acquired open space properties.
The Trails Program will focus on 4 major areas of work. They are:
- Developing standard specifications for trail construction on land.
- Completing an inventory condition assessment of the park and trail
system.
- Developing a long-term trail renovation and construction plan.
- Completing trail renovation projects each year beginning in 1999.
The goals of the program will be met by a network of Parks and Recreation
Staff and by working closely with community volunteers and trails organizations.
Today, the program has a staff of one, the Trails Program Coordinator.
A laborer position will soon be added. This new program will have limited
resources and will not be able to address every trails issue on Park
property.
