Taejon ("Great Field" in the Korean language) is the Republic of Korea's sixth largest city with a population of 1.2 million. It is located in central Korea about 100 miles south of Seoul and is an important administrative, transportation, education, science, industrial center.

Chung Nam National University, one of the eight four-year universities located in Taejon, is one of the most prestigious in Korea and home of the nation's top medical school. Taedok Science Town is a unique scientific research center for high-tech industry. Taejon hosted an International Exposition in 1993. Major industries include textiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The region is known as the farm belt of the nation.

Seattle Mayor Charles Royer led a delegation to Taejon in October 1989 for the official signing of the sister city agreement. Members of the delegation included several Seattle business and community leaders. Future activities will include cultural and educational exchanges, public employees training, and promotion of trade between the two cities.
