Partial intersection closure at 12th Avenue South and South Jackson Street on Feb. 22

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will be closing a portion of the intersection of 12th Avenue South and South Jackson Street in the Little Saigon Neighborhood on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Weekend lane closure on 12th Avenue South at South Jackson Street August 10-11

The weekend of August 10, 12th Avenue South will be closed to northbound through traffic at South Jackson Street in the Little Saigon Neighborhood. A contractor working for the Seattle Department of Transportation is reconstructing parts of South Jackson Street between Fifth Avenue South and 14th Avenue South for the First Hill Streetcar project and the closure is required for this work.

Mayor announces support for young immigrants eligible for work visas

Mayor McGinn has announced new City efforts to support young people eligible for work authorizations through the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) policy launched by President Barack Obama in June 2012. Individuals age 18 and over can now call the Seattle City Light Service Center at (206) 684-3000 and have their names added to the utility bill of their home, helping to provide a paper trail to prove residency.

New Bilingual Street Name Signs Unveiled in the Chinatown-International District

Today Mayor Mike McGinn and Chinatown-International District Business Improvement Area (CIDBIA) board member Tuck Eng unveiled the first of several bilingual street name signs at Dragon Fest, the Chinatown-International District’s summer festival. The first sign, located at the corner of Sixth Avenue South and South King Street, is being installed as part of a neighborhood wide program in Seattle’s historic Chinatown and Japantown. Over the summer, translated street name signs in English and Chinese, or English and Japanese will be added to over thirty intersections through a partnership between the CIDBIA and the City of Seattle.

Mayor announces new literacy program for local students

Mayor McGinn has announced a new program that will help students in our community reach the goal of literacy by third grade. The new program, Read and Rise, will offer training workshops designed to help parents better support their students as they learn to read. The program will also provide reading materials and training curricula for parents to take home.

Weekend lane closure on 12th Avenue South at Boren Avenue South June 22-24

The southbound lane of 12th Avenue South will be closed to through traffic between Boren Avenue South and South Jackson Street in the Little Saigon Neighborhood next weekend, from Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. until Monday, June 24 at 5 a.m. A contractor working for the Seattle Department of Transportation is reconstructing parts of South Jackson Street between Fifth Avenue South and 14th Avenue South for the First Hill Streetcar project, and the closure on 12th Avenue South is required for this work.

Mayor McGinn introduces new “Predictive Policing” software

Mayor Mike McGinn and Police Chief John Diaz announced today that new "Predictive Policing" software has been deployed in the East and Southwest Precincts. The software was designed by the University of California, Los Angeles in partnership with the Los Angeles Police Department. It has been used by police departments all over the nation to reduce crime through deep analysis of crime and location data.

Seattle’s snowplow routes are changed this year

The city's snowplow routes near your home and along your commute route may have changed this year, most likely for the better. To find out, see the map on Seattle Department of Transportation’s Winter Weather website, http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/winterweather.htm. The map is also in a brochure available at the city's public libraries, community centers, neighborhood service centers, and sent home in December with children in Seattle’s public elementary schools.
