Summer Learning

Students' reading, English language, and mathematics skills decline during summer vacation. This has disproportionately strong negative effects on low-income students that contribute over time to significant achievement gaps.

We invest in summer learning programs to help lessen this summer learning loss for low-income students and to provide extra time for students who are behind to catch up with their peers.

Our Strategies for Avoiding Summer Learning Loss

High-quality summer learning programs:

  • Have a clear purpose and focus on building academic skills in an engaging environment
  • Target student recruitment to ensure programming addresses student needs
  • Promote consistent student attendance and meaningful family engagement

  • Devote ample time to academic instruction that features individualized attention from motivated and talented teachers

  • Offer enrichment opportunities that improve learning skills by exposing students to new topics and activities

  • Use data to improve student outcomes

How We Select Service Providers

  • We invest directly in summer programs led by community-based organizations and local schools serving Seattle students at the K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade levels

  • Organizations and schools compete for available funds by submitting a Request for Investment that outlines how they will use Levy funds to deliver high quality summer programs to students at risk for suffering summer learning loss

  • Individualized goals are set for each program; programs must make acceptable progress towards those goals in order to continue to receive funding

  • Additional funds will be available to support programs serving students entering grades K-5 and 6-8; we will reopen Request for Investment application processes in fall 2014

Measures of Success

Continued Levy funding depends on programs meeting specific goals from among these measures:

  • Students absent fewer than 10% of program days

  • Students improve on tests providers choose to deliver at the beginning and end of each program

  • From spring to fall, students maintain or improve reading and/or math skills as assessed by Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) exams administered within Seattle Public Schools

  • Students entering kindergarten show growth toward kindergarten readiness indicated by Teaching Strategies Gold assessments

  • Students complete courses bearing credits toward high school graduation
