Council Selects 8 Finalists for Vacancy Consideration, Hearing this Friday

SEATTLE - City Council today selected 8 finalists to consider for filling the remaining term of vacant Council Position 9 today. Forty-four people originally applied for the position.

"I thank all the candidates for submitting their names for consideration and public scrutiny. I'm pleased with the list of finalists we have, and I look forward to hearing more from them on Friday," said Council President Tim Burgess.

The finalists, listed here in alphabetical order, are:

Finalists were selected based on their understanding of city government and the public policy issues associated with the Council's Committee on Housing Affordability, Human Services and Economic Resiliency; their demonstrated commitment to social justice and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across cultures and with diverse populations; and their desire to serve the people of Seattle and assume the responsibilities and accountability inherent in the work of a Councilmember.

Members of the public can submit comments about potential appointees via email at, by calling Council offices, or in person at upcoming meetings on April 24 or 27.

The Council intends to follow the process outlined below:

Presentations by Finalists to City Council: Friday, April 24, 4:00 p.m.
The City Council will convene a special public meeting to hear 3-minute presentations from the finalists, ask questions of the finalists, and receive comments from the public.

City Council Appointment: Monday, April 27, 2:00 p.m.
The Council will fill the vacancy at the Full Council meeting by a majority vote.

The City Charter gives the City Council 20 days to fill a vacant Council position. This period began April 13, 2015. In the event the Council fails to fill the vacant position by the end of that 20-day period, the Council must meet every business day thereafter until the vacancy is filled.
