Proposed rule relating to required posting of
The Seattle Office for Civil Rights has proposed the following rule relating to required posting of Seattle Open Housing Ordinance signs. The requirement to post a Seattle Fair Housing Ordinance Sign as set forth in this rule shall become effective on March 31, 2005.
The Public has until February 28, 2005 to comment on this proposed rule. Please address comments in writing to:

The proposed rule reads as follows:
"Except as provided in this rule, all owners and other persons leasing or selling property to be used as a dwelling shall post and maintain in a conspicuous place upon such property a Seattle Open Housing Ordinance Sign which shall indicate the property is available for lease, rent or purchase in a manner which does not discriminate against any person because of race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, national origin, age, sex, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity, political ideology, participation in a Section 8 program, the presence of any disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a disabled person.
"Real estate brokers, real estate agents, and persons engaged in the business of property management shall post and maintain a Seattle Open Housing Ordinance Sign, as described above, in a conspicuous place at each office or place of business which is engaged in leasing or selling a dwelling.
"For purposes of this rule, "a conspicuous place" means a place where all persons upon entering the real property or place of business can readily observe the required sign.
"This rule does not apply to individuals selling, leasing or subleasing their own place of residence or to dwellings described in SMC 14.08.190A, SMC 14.08.190C, SMC 14.08.190D and SMC 14.08.190F.
"To facilitate compliance with this rule, the Seattle Open Housing Ordinance Sign will be available free of charge from the Seattle Office for Civil Rights (SOCR). If a sign other than the sign available from SOCR is used, it must be printed on white paper no smaller than 8.5" by 11" and contain the same information and the same size lettering as the sign available from SOCR.
"Pursuant to SMC 14.08.010, any person who fails to post a Seattle Open Housing Ordinance Sign as required by this rule is subject to a penalty of $500 for each day the sign is not posted as required. "
