Marion Street Paving to Begin Next Week

SEATTLE-The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) plans to begin paving Marion Street in downtown Seattle next week, between Western and Sixth avenues. The contractor expects to complete the job by early October.

Marion Street is a one-way, eastbound street. Marion will be restricted to two lanes of traffic during peak periods and one lane during non-peak hours starting Monday, August 3. No on-street parking will be permitted in the construction areas. For the first two to three weeks, there will be no on-street parking on both sides of Marion between First and Third avenues.

Work on Marion will be coordinated with paving on Second Avenue.

The project will include new concrete and asphalt pavement, upgraded curb ramps, and some areas of replaced sidewalk.

Originally scheduled for 2010 construction, the project was accelerated as part of the Mayor's economic stimulus package to create jobs and revive the local economy. The "Seattle Jobs Forward" is a package of immediate local action to create direct jobs and boost Seattle’s economy over the next two years.

SDOT appreciates the patience of travelers during this summer’s critical downtown paving projects. The project staff is working with the contractor to coordinate downtown construction projects and minimize traffic impacts. The result will ultimately make getting around on these heavily traveled streets better for all users-motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.

The Seattle Department of Transportation builds, maintains and operates Seattle's $12 billion transportation infrastructure. To further Mayor Nickels’ goal to get Seattle moving, the department manages short- and long-term investments in streets, bridges, pavement and trees, that better connect the city with the region.
