University Bridge to Get a New Coat of Paint;
Traffic and Bike Lane Closures Coming Up

SEATTLE-Painting preparation has started on the University Bridge. The contractor will close the east side, northbound traffic lane and also bicycle lane for several days during the week of January 12-16, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The inside northbound lane and the southbound lanes will remain open, as well as walkways on both sides. Bicycles may use the northbound walkway while the northbound bicycle lane is closed.

The contractor will then switch to work on the west side of the bridge (probably January 15-19, if weather conditions permit). Then the west side, southbound traffic lane and also bicycle lane will be closed for several days, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The inside southbound lane and the northbound lanes will be open, as well as walkways on both sides. For southbound access across the bridge, bicycles may use the southbound walkway.

The east side, northbound lane closure was previously announced to take place at an earlier date, but due to weather conditions, was rescheduled.

The purpose of this project is to extend the life of the University Bridge. The project includes washing, removing rust and damaged paint, applying primer paint where necessary and repainting all of the structural steel on the bridge. The railings and light and power poles will also be repainted. The project is scheduled for completion this summer.

The Seattle Department of Transportation builds, maintains and operates Seattle's $8 billion transportation infrastructure. To further Mayor Nickels’ goal to get Seattle moving, the department manages short- and long-term investments in streets, bridges, pavement and trees, that better connect the city with the region.
