Southbound Aurora Lanes to be Closed Wed for Tree Removal

(SEATTLE)--Beginning at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, October 15, SDOT will close two southbound lanes on Aurora between West Galer and West Comstock streets, leaving one southbound lane open. SDOT Urban Forestry crews will remove a large oak tree from the western side of the roadway. As soon as they are able, they will open a second southbound lane. They expect to complete the work and reopen all lanes by 4 p.m. Northbound lanes of Aurora will not be affected.

The oak tree is approximately 75 feet tall and 20 inches in diameter. Monday it was discovered that the trunk of the tree had split, so that it could possibly fall into the street. The tree will be removed as a precautionary measure. Its trunk is bound with wire until it can be removed. SDOT will replace the oak with two new trees, in accordance with the city’s policy for increasing the city’s urban forest.

Nolan Rundquist, SDOT’s City Arborist, advises property owners to properly care for trees to help them withstand winter storms. Consult with a certified arborist to determine if seriously defective, decayed or damaged trees or large branches should be removed. For more information, see the following Web sites: and
