Seattle Police Department Statement August 9th, 2008
Early this morning, the Seattle Police Department received notification that one of our officers was involved in an off-duty shooting in Sturgis, South Dakota. We believe that four other off-duty Seattle Police officers were present when the shooting occurred.
South Dakota law enforcement officials are presently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Further details are currently unknown to us.
Chief Kerlikowske immediately dispatched a team of investigators to Sturgis for the purpose of gathering information. This team consists of our Homicide Lieutenant, Homicide detectives and an Office of Professional Accountability sergeant. They depart tonight.
The Seattle Police Department considers this a matter of utmost seriousness. All five officers will be placed on administrative reassignment (relieved of duty) pending further investigation by the South Dakota authorities.
