Mayor Nickels Proclaims Sub Pop’s “Utterly Lost Weekend”
SEATTLE – Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels yesterday proclaimed this weekend to be “Sub Pop Records’ ‘Utterly Lost Weekend’,” in honor of the local record label’s 20th anniversary and its significant contributions to Seattle’s musical heritage.
“Seattle is one of today’s most dynamic music cities, thanks in large part to Sub Pop Records,” said Nickels. “Embodying our music community’s fierce independence and intense dedication, Sub Pop and its recording artists make it one of the best record labels in the world.”
In Sub Pop’s tongue-in-cheek style, the label will celebrate “20 years of NOT going out of business,” by gathering past and present bands on its label for a series of events and concerts July 11, 12 and 13, throughout the Seattle area. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support non-profits selected by participating bands.
Nickels helped kick off the celebration on Thursday at the Experience Music Project by honoring label founders Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman with the proclamation. He urged the audience to join him in “celebrating Sub Pop’s questionable taste in music, generous nature and improbable solvency.”
“Sub Pop Records is one of our local music industry’s greatest assets,” said James Keblas, director of the Mayor’s Office of Film + Music. “Their presence and investment in this community are primary reasons Seattle continues to be a great American music city, and they can be blamed for a legion of hair-swinging, flannel-clad rock bands."
Joining Nickels in celebrating the record label’s success, the Space Needle will fly a Sub Pop flag and paint the top of the needle to look like a vinyl record.
The Mayor’s Office of Film + Music, is devoted to supporting and growing Seattle's film and music industries. The city department provides a streamlined resource for film and music needs. It offers creative tax incentives and professional business development opportunities, making this vibrant city the perfect background for film and music production.
