Holiday weekend celebrations promise fun and traffic concerns

SEATTLE - The long holiday weekend offers up fun events beginning with a midnight race on July 3, two fireworks shows on July 4, kick-off of Seafair with the Seafair Pirates landing at Alki on Saturday, July 5, and many other activities. The many celebrations are expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators. The Seattle Department of Transportation suggests that motorists should plan on delays, parking at a distance and walking to the events, or better yet, consider using alternate modes of travel.

Thursday, July 3
Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers: 7:10 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
22,000 spectators
Congestion around Safeco Field prior to and after game.

Firecracker 5000 race: 11:55 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. (July 4)
1800 participants
Starts at the Memorial Stadium in the Seattle Center, heads out on 4th N at Republican, north on 4th to Mercer, east on Mercer to 9th, north on 9th to Broad, south on Broad to Denny, west on Denny to 1st N, north on 1st to Mercer, east on Mercer to 5th, south on 5th to Harrison, west on Harrison around the Center Fountain, back to Mercer, east on Mercer to 4th, south on 4th to the Memorial Stadium.

Friday, July 4
Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
4,000 spectators
Festival to be held at the Lake Union Center for Wooden Boats. Expect congestion on Valley Street which may impact traffic coming off of I-5 at Mercer Street.

Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers: 1:10 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
29,000 spectators
Congestion around Safeco Field prior to and after game.

WaMu Family 4th: Noon - 11:00 p.m. (traffic delays possibly up to midnight)
Lake Union-Gas Works Park
50,000 spectators
At 6:00 p.m. police will set up a perimeter restricting traffic to “local access only” west of Eastlake to Lake Union and south of N 40th to Gas Works Park and surrounding Wallingford streets.

Fourth of Jul-Ivars Fireworks Show: 10:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. (traffic delays possibly up to midnight)
Elliott Bay
No event scheduled at Myrtle Edwards Park. Spectators are expected to view from the park and viewpoints on Queen Anne Hill, Magnolia and West Seattle. At 5:00 p.m. Alki Ave SW and Harbor Ave SW will be closed to all except for local access.

Saturday, July 5
Seafair Pirates Landing: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (12:30 p.m. arrival time near Bath House)
12,000 spectators
Congestion along Alki Beach.

Seafair Milk Carton Derby: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
10,000 spectators
Held at Green Lake with congestion expected near the south side of the Aqua Theatre and on surrounding streets.

Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
4,000 spectators
Festival to be held at the Lake Union Center for Wooden Boats. Expect congestion on Valley Street which may impact traffic coming off of I-5 at Mercer Street.

Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers: 7:10 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
26,000 spectators
Congestion around Safeco Field prior to and after game.

Sunday, July 6

4,000 spectators

Summer Sundays on Pike Place: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
1,000 participants
Streets surrounding Pike Place Market may be congested.

Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers: 1:10 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
29,000 spectators
Congestion around Safeco Field prior to and after game.
