Seattle Animal Shelter hosts 9th annual “Furry 5K Fun Run & Walk”
Still time to register for June 8 event at Seward Park

SEATTLE – There’s still time to register for the Seattle Animal Shelter’s 9th Annual Furry 5K Fun Run and Walk. Thousands of animal lovers and outdoor enthusiasts are expected to run and walk with their pets on June 8, 2008, at 10 a.m. in Seward Park. They’ll run and walk to raise money for the shelter’s Help the Animals Fund.

Registration fees are $25 in advance (or $20 without T-shirt); $30 day of race. The deadline for in-person or online registration is June 5. To register online, go to www.furry5k.com. Or you can pre-register in person at:  Seattle Running Company (Capitol Hill), Sound Sports (Downtown Seattle), Super Jock and Jill (Greenlake), The Footzone (Bellevue, Issaquah, Redmond). Day of race registration runs from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m.

“Community support is critical to our efforts to rehabilitate sick and injured animals,” said Shelter Director Don Jordan. “The Furry 5K is a great opportunity to make a big difference in the lives of needy animals in our city, and it’s a fun outdoor activity for the whole family, including your family pet.”

All proceeds from the Furry 5K support Seattle’s Help the Animals Fund. Donations are tax deductible, (consult with your tax advisor of course). This fund meets the requirements for “Matching Fund” programs within certain companies and organizations.

Last year, the Furry 5K grossed approximately $100,000, but veterinary care needs continue to expand and last year alone the Help the Animals Fund paid for more than $98,000 worth of veterinary bills. Established in 1977, the Help the Animals Fund pays for critical veterinary care for sick, injured, and abused animals, giving them a second chance at finding new homes and families.

Since opening its doors in 1972, the Seattle Animal Shelter has helped hundreds of thousands of people and their pets. The shelter educates the public regarding responsible pet ownership; provides sanitary, safe and humane housing for impounded animals; unites adoptable animals with new responsible owners; provides a low-cost spay/neuter program; and enforces animal control ordinances relating to the leash law, scoop law, nuisance barking and vicious animals; and prevents cruelty to animals.

Animals are available for adoption seven days a week from noon to 6 p.m. For more information about the Seattle Animal Shelter, call (206)386-PETS (7387), visit the shelter’s Web site at www.seattleanimalshelter.org or visit the shelter at 2061 – 15th Ave. W., one mile south of the Ballard Bridge.
