Seattle Joins Climate Registry as Charter Member

National organization formed to gather information about climate pollution

SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels announced today that Seattle has joined The Climate Registry as a Founding Reporter.

The Climate Registry is a nonprofit organization that will provide a standardized measurement of greenhouse gas emissions across industries and borders. Founded by 39 states, five Canadian provinces, three Native American tribes and the District of Columbia, The Climate Registry will publicly report its findings.

By joining as a Founding Reporter, Seattle will have significant input into the scope and design of measurement standards.

“Seattle is a national leader when it comes to measuring our own carbon footprint,” said Nickels. “By becoming a Founding Reporter of The Climate Registry, we can lend our expertise to this national effort to measure climate pollution, and help shape future policies.”

“Seattle has demonstrated exemplary environmental leadership by courageously stepping forward to support The Climate Registry in its preliminary stages. We are deeply grateful for its integral support in helping to address the challenge of climate change,” said Gina McCarthy, chair of The Climate Registry.

As a member of The Climate Registry, Seattle must calculate its annual emissions from its fleets and city-owned buildings and facilities. The data will then be shared with the public through The Climate Registry Web site: www.theclimateregistry.org.

Currently, the city updates its greenhouse gas inventory every three years.
