Mayor Nickels receives Urban League CDCC visionary award
Award recognizes Nickels’ leadership assisting WMBEs in wake of I-200
SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels today received the inaugural visionary award from the Urban League’s Contractor Development & Competitiveness Center for his leadership in establishing the center in the wake of I-200.
“By the time I took office in 2002, the fallout from I-200 was a dramatic drop-off in the participation of women- and minority-owned businesses in city contracting. That wasn’t acceptable. Small businesses are the backbone of our community, and CDCC helps ensure everyone has access to our city’s opportunities,” said Nickels. “That’s why we partnered with the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle to create the CDCC. I’m proud of the accomplishments of the CDCC and I’m honored to receive this award.”
The CDCC provides assistance and training to small disadvantaged businesses, including WMBE firms, and advocates on their behalf with large prime contractors. The CDCC’s objective is to improve the competitiveness of these firms so they can compete and succeed on their own in the long-term.
Between January 2004 and December 2006, nearly $32 million worth of contracts were awarded to small businesses through the help of the CDCC.
The award was presented at the CDCC’s fifth annual Contractors’ Award Luncheon.
