Mayor Nickels Hosts 6th Annual Youth Town Hall at Seattle Center
April 28 event is opportunity for teens to discuss key issues with mayor

SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels and the Mayor’s Youth Council will host the sixth annual Mayor’s Youth Town Hall on Saturday, April 28, from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. at Seattle Center’s Fisher Pavilion. At the event, youth from across the city will get a chance to talk with Nickels about the issues affecting them. All youth are welcome.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to make their voices heard about the issues that matter most to them,” Nickels said. “They are the next generation of leaders, and we look to them for the ideas and the passion that will keep our city moving forward.”

The mayor’s Youth Council is composed of 23 high-school-aged youth from Seattle’s 13 neighborhood districts. During its yearlong term, the council hosted youth community meetings and made recommendations to the mayor on topics ranging from redesigning the Seattle Center to providing more meaningful opportunities for youth to learn while serving in the city.

The mayor’s Youth Town Hall is part of a full-day Youth Summit, sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation and includes: morning workshops on race and social justice, from 9 a.m. to noon; the Town Hall from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m.; and roundtable discussions with community leaders, including KUBE DJ Eric Powers, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by Metrocenter YMCA.

The Mayor’s Youth Council was formed in 2003 as a way for youth to participate in city government and have a formal voice for issues that affect them. The goal of the Mayor’s Youth Council is to help young people connect with their community.

Teen leaders will be available for interviews before the Youth Town Hall. For more information, call Jessica Paul at (206) 382-4360 or email her at jpaul@seattleymca.org
