Mayor Nickels names Fred Podesta director of
Department of Executive Administration
SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels today announced Fred Podesta as his choice for
director of the Department of Executive Administration (DEA).
“Fred brings a breadth of experience and a proven track-record to the
job,” Nickels said. “He has earned a reputation as an innovator
and a capable leader during his more than 10 years with the city of Seattle,
including completion of several major upgrades to critical city information
systems.”
Prior to his appointment as acting director of DEA in December, Podesta was
the director of Business Technology in DEA. In this role, he directed the development
and operation of many of the city’s information systems, including upgrading
the city’s financial management and payroll/human resources information
management systems. Podesta’s previous experience includes serving as
the director of Information Technology at City Light, and work with King County,
Microsoft, Lockheed, and the state of Arizona.
“I look forward to serving the employees of the city of Seattle and
the residents of Seattle. This department touches on so many aspects of daily
life - ranging from critical internal services that help us do the city’s
business, to adopting out puppies and kittens from our animal shelter,” said
Podesta.
DEA provides a variety of services to the public, including consumer protection;
public safety; animal welfare; business and pet licensing; tax auditing and
enforcement; and processing of payments, fines, and taxes. DEA also provides
internal administrative services to city departments, such as purchasing, contracting,
payroll, risk management, and data systems management.
Podesta, 46, has served as acting director since December 2006, when his predecessor
Ken Nakatsu was appointed to serve as the mayor’s Chief of Department
Operations. As DEA director, Podesta’s annual salary is $129,000. The
appointment is subject to City Council confirmation.
