Seattle Police Chief Appoints Blue Ribbon Panel to Consult on Capitol Hill Murders

Seattle Police Chief R. Gil Kerlikowske announced this morning that the department would engage a panel of experts to provide advice and consultation to the detectives investigating last Saturday’s murders on Capitol Hill. The panel will be headed by Professor James Alan Fox, Northeastern University, Boston, MA. Chief Kerlikowske said, “Professor Fox is this country’s leading authority and researcher in the phenomenon of mass killing. With his, and the other panel members’ guidance, the department will continue to work tirelessly to understand every facet of this tragedy and particularly, WHY this happened. We have an absolute obligation and responsibility to our community, and quite frankly to this country, to do everything in our power with the hope that we can learn from this terrible incident.”

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels states, “We may never be able to answer the troubling question of why Kyle Huff decided to take so many innocent lives, but as a city, we must make every effort to understand the events that unfolded so tragically on Saturday,” Nickels said. “I’m hopeful that the blue ribbon panel can shed light on this horrific incident and help the process of healing for the victims’ families and the community as a whole.”

Professor Fox said today that he welcomed and appreciated the opportunity to work with the Seattle Police Department. He expressed his recognition of the expertise and professionalism of the department and this very progressive move by the organization to bring together an elite group of experts to further investigate what occurred. Professor Fox stated, “While examining the motivation, causes and precursors surrounding last weekend's mass murder will not ease the pain and loss, we shall try to make some sense of this seemingly senseless tragedy. By doing so, we hope to bring some closure through understanding and, at the same time, reduce the risk of this type of carnage.”

The department is continuing to interview witnesses, examine evidence, and contact friends, acquaintances and relatives of Kyle Huff.
