City & county team up to make ‘Sliver’ safer in South Park
Agreement builds on cooperation between
Seattle police and King County sheriff

SEATTLE - The Seattle Police Department and the King County Sheriff’s Office have entered into a mutual aid agreement to better serve an unincorporated slice of South Park known as “The Sliver.”

South Park mostly falls under Seattle police jurisdiction, but a small section of the neighborhood is unincorporated and patrolled by King County deputies.

Both departments have stepped up presence in the neighborhood in response to several waves of gang-related violence. The mutual aid agreement - which is already in force - clarifies roles and improves coordination between the two departments when responding to emergencies and other calls in “The Sliver”.

“It’s important that we don’t let lines on a map get in the way of protecting people in our neighborhoods,” said Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. “I am pleased that the King County Sheriff’s Office and Seattle Police Department are building on their solid record of cooperation to ensure even better service in South Park.”

The sheriff’s office and Seattle police have developed, and maintain, an excellent working relationship in protecting neighboring jurisdictions. King County deputies will continue to provide service to “The Sliver.” However, the agreement recognizes that some incidents in an area require cooperative response.

The agreement ensures that 9-1-1 calls made anywhere in South Park will receive immediate response from the law enforcement officials nearest to the problem. Emergency calls will continue to be routed through the sheriff’s office, but Seattle police officers have full authority to respond to incidents in “The Sliver” as if it were their jurisdiction. If Seattle police units respond to an emergency call, sheriff’s office supervisors will provide advice and assistance.
