Mayor invites public to an open house on improving Seattle roads
Series of meetings around the city begins March 16th

SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels wants residents to weigh in on a major funding package that will be proposed this year to end the backlog of road and bridge repairs and prepare Seattle’s transportation system for the next century. The Mayor called for increased investments in Seattle’s roads and bridges during his State of the City address last week.

“We now have only a fraction of what we need to maintain our streets and bridges,” Nickels said. “If we don’t fill the gap, our streets will decay. And when the streets fail, the fabric of our neighborhoods is put at risk.”

The city has seen its share of dedicated transportation funding fall 66 percent since 1995, creating a growing backlog of maintenance and repairs.

Nickels will propose a specific financial package to the City Council this year, including a ballot measure that would be voted on this November. Starting Thursday, March 16, the city will hold a series of community meetings to gather public comment and determine the size of the funding package.

“Our streets, sidewalks and bike trails are a public asset,” Nickels said. “We must preserve and expand the system to safely and effectively move people throughout the city and region.”
