Parks, Aquarium Staff Invite the Community to Celebrate Replacement of the Final Pile at Pier 59

WHO: Seattle Parks and Recreation, Turner Construction staff and crew, Aquarium staff, and members of the community.

WHAT: Crews will prepare to drive the final replacement pile at Pier 59. Crew members, staff and the public are invited to wear hard hats, enjoy coffee and pastries, and sign the galvanized steel pile to commemorate this major project milestone.

WHEN: Monday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m.

WHERE: 1483 Alaskan Way, on Seattle's downtown waterfront.

After many months of pile replacement work at Pier 59, Seattle Parks and Recreation's construction crew will drive the final replacement pile on Monday morning. Work began in mid-2005 to renovate the Seattle Aquarium at Pier 59, to restore structural integrity to the majority of the facility by installing new driven and posted piles, and new concrete aprons to replace the existing wooden ones.

After careful removal of the building's front façade, the former east end of the building was demolished last September. The building's new east end will begin to take shape later this month. Beginning last summer and throughout the fall and winter months, pile replacement work continued and will be completed with 100% safety compliance.

This project will help build strong families and healthy communities, one of Mayor Greg Nickels' highest priorities for Seattle.

For more project information, please call Parks Project Manager Colleen Browne at (206) 979-2677 or e-mail her at colleen.browne@seattle.gov. Information is also available online at: www.seattle.gov/parks/maintenance/pier59 and at: www.seattleaquarium.org/about/pna/index.html.
