City seeks proposals for Innovative Senior Technology Program

The city of Seattle Department of Information Technology is now inviting proposals for the Design, Implementation and Management of a "Seniors Training Seniors in Technology" program. A grant in the amount of $35,000 will be awarded.

Application deadline is 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22, 1999.

The intent of the project is to train a group of senior trainers, develop a network of senior trainers, and facilitate the trainers’ placement to train and assist other seniors at community technology centers or other appropriate locations.

The city initiated this project in order to:

  • Increase the technology literacy of senior citizens in Seattle;
  • Build community capacity by increasing the number of senior trainers;
  • Increase the availability of classes and technical assistance for seniors learning how to use computers;
  • Encourage a network of senior trainers to share ideas and support each other; and
  • Reach seniors who currently have little access to or knowledge about computers, especially low-income and limited-English-speaking seniors.

Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with institutions, agencies or community technology centers currently serving seniors and/or offering related training. We also hope for proposals which utilize the talents of existing senior trainers. The city is very interested in an applicant who will be able to sustain the "Seniors Training Seniors" program after this pilot project.

This program is funded as part of the Citizens Literacy Access Fund (CLAF).
