Seattle Takes a Giant Step for Emergency Preparedness
Mayor Breaks Ground for first new Fire Station in 30 years
SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels broke ground today on the first new fire station
to be built in Seattle in over 30 years. Fire Station 10 is also the first
station to be built under the voter-approved Fire Facility and Emergency Response
levy.
“This is another step toward making Seattle the most prepared city in
America,” said Nickels. “The last time we built a fire station
in Seattle Gerald Ford was president. This new facility will strengthen our
ability to respond to a man-made or natural emergency.”
City Council President Jan Drago, Fire Chief Gregory Dean, Fleets and Facilities
Director Brenda Bauer, and Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske
joined the mayor in lifting their shovels in celebration as they broke ground.
The levy, passed by 69 percent of Seattle voters on Nov. 4, 2003, provides
money to renovate, expand, or rebuild 32 neighborhood fire stations; build
two new firefighting boats and renovate a third; and purchase equipment and
supplies to help people during an emergency.
The new 61,000-square-foot facility will cost approximately $43 million and
will be located between Yesler and Washington and 4th and 5th avenues. In addition
to a new Fire Station 10, the facility will include:
• A new Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which houses the City’s
operations and administrative functions during a declared emergency
• A new Fire Alarm Center, which includes a dispatch area; shift personnel
support spaces; and administrative offices.
