Mayor launches the Green Seattle Guide
City offers 101 ways to take action and protect Seattle’s urban environment

SEATTLE - Mayor Greg Nickels has launched a web-based guide that offers people 101 common-sense steps they can take to keep Seattle’s environment green and healthy.

The guide, Green Seattle Guide: 101 actions for a healthy urban environment, also offers a wealth of resources including websites, publications and volunteer opportunities for people who want to protect the environment at home and on the go.

“People in this city are looking for ways to protect the environment,” Nickels said. “This guide provides simple and effective tips that will make a difference in keeping our air, land and waters clean for generations to come.”

The guide, which can be accessed online under ‘Green Seattle Guide’ at http://www.seattle.gov/environment/, is a one-stop shop for environmental information and programs. It describes and ranks101 actions that can help protect the air, climate, land, water, wildlife and natural habitat.

The actions are organized by everyday activities - in your home, in your yard, when you shop, on the move, and in your community. Web links provide additional information and resources for each action. What makes this guide unique is that it gives people a tool to assess the relative impact of their actions.

“Sustaining Seattle’s unique urban quality of life will require the ultimate team effort,” said Steve Nicholas, Director, City of Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment. "This guide is full of ideas on how each and every one of us can help care for our environment and build healthy communities and a vibrant city.”

The guide is produced through a partnership of several City departments and regional agencies including the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and the Puget Sound Action Team.

"The Green Seattle Guide is an excellent tool for citizens to make personal choices in daily living to help create a better environment for Seattle and Puget Sound," said Brad Ack, Director of the Puget Sound Action Team, a program in the Governor's Office that worked with Seattle to produce the guide.

The guide is available both as a downloadable PDF file and as an interactive website.
