Seattle Municipal Court Co-Hosts Interpreter Consortium Conference

SEATTLE – October 12, 2005 – Seattle Municipal Court, along with the National Center For State Courts, will host the Interpreter Consortium Conference October 15-19. Representatives from 34 consortium member states will gather for the annual business meeting at the Washington Athletic Club, preceded by a Court Interpreter Workshop at Seattle Municipal Court. The State of Washington is working to support testing and certification for language interpreters used in the courts. Presently, over 275 people have been certified with the State in seven different languages. Participants will also discuss ways to improve upon existing interpreter programs as well as develop new criteria.

Judge Ron Mamiya states, "Seattle Municipal Court is proud to co-host this year's Interpreter Workshops, and that 75 interpreters from ten member States are attending these educational sessions."

Seattle Municipal Court provides language and sign interpreters for over 60 different languages and dialects for hearings before the court and during proceedings. Interpreter services schedule with contract interpreters for an average of 420 hearings per month.

This year Seattle Municipal Court created the positions of Interpreter Coordinator Staff and Court Certified Spanish Interpreter, and is now in the process of creating a formal Interpreter Services Program.
