Seattle Police dedicate new patrol boat
in honor of fallen Harbor Officer Lone

SEATTLE – Chief Gil Kerlikowske, the men and women of the Seattle Police Department and Kvichak Marine Industries today dedicated a new patrol boat in honor of Seattle Police Harbor Officer Jackson V. Lone. They were joined by Mayor Greg Nickels, the family of the late Jackson Lone and members of the boating community. Lone died in the line of duty while responding to a call on the Lake Union waterway on March 16, 2005.

The boat was delivered last month to further enhance the water operations and function in emergency response, dive rescue, law enforcement patrol, port homeland security, and initial fire support, which will be stationed between the Harbor Patrol facility and the Elliott Bay Marina. The cost of the boat is $1.153 million, and was funded by the Urban Areas Security Initiative grant.

“Post 9/11, our responsibilities with other neighboring law enforcement agencies have grown significantly in the protection of our residents and visitors, piers and bridges, including the security of government vessels and other private vessels while in port along Seattle’s waterways,” said Chief Kerlikowske. “I want to thank Kvichak Marine for their outstanding product, and look forward to the safe deployment of the new Lone Patrol Boat.”

The boat was constructed by Kvichak (pronounced Kwee-jack) Marine Industries and designed by Jensen Maritime. Kvichak and Jensen are local businesses that continue to support Seattle’s maritime industry, providing more than 22,000 jobs in the community. They are the same team to construct and design the department’s Patrol Boat 4 that was delivered in 1998.

With a life expectancy of approximately 30-years, this multi-purpose boat measures 38-ft. in length and has a beam of 14-ft. It is powered by twin Caterpillar C-9 engines, rated at 567 BPX at 2500 rpm, each with Hamilton 322 water jets for propulsion, which is the chosen combination that provides for excellent maneuverability and a top speed of 30+ knots.

Brian Thomas, vice president and chief operating officer of Kvichak, said, "It is always a pleasure working with the Seattle Harbor Patrol Unit. Since we first worked together on Patrol 4 some eight years ago, the relationships have grown and developed to where I think we all have trust and respect for each other, which makes working closely together on a new boat so rewarding. We understand what is important to the department, and they have the confidence that we will deliver what we promise. It is a terrific relationship.”

The Harbor Patrol Unit is a specialized unit that is dedicated to water safety and the protection and preservation of life and property on the water and along the shores within the City of Seattle. It is the only marine unit in the Pacific Northwest that provides a full-time, 24-hour patrol operation. There are now nine patrol vessels that cover over 200 miles of city shoreline and over 27 square miles of fresh and salt water.
